PENANG FRIED KWAY TEOW / FRIED OYSTER

Run by Madam Gao and her husband, this stall specialises in fried delights, such as Fried Kway Teow, Fried Oyster and Fried Carrot Cake. Madam Gao first learnt how to prepare these dishes from her husband’s family and has been running her own stall at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre since November 2015. Her Oyster Omelette, prepared with Korean imported oysters, is a must-try!

Ah Khoon Authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice

Formerly working in the oil and gas industry, NUS graduate, Derrick Lee is also one of the graduates of Fei Siong Group’s hawker-preneurship programme in 2015. He subsequently started operating his own stall at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre with the help of his mentor, veteran hawker Foo Joon Khoon.

 

Derrick’s rendition of the ubiquitous Hainanese Chicken Rice stands out thanks to his self-developed recipe that features wild rice grains cooked with aromatic ginger, garlic and homemade chicken stock. The dish is completed with moist and tender slices of poached chicken.

HK Wanton Noodle

Having run her own food stall for over 20 years, lady boss Sandy has a wealth of experience as a hawker. Her menu here is extensive and counts Hong Kong-style Wanton Noodles, Dumpling Noodles, Braised Soft Pork Ribs Noodles and Mushroom Chicken Feet Noodles as customer faves.

Sandy says that all her dumplings and braised meats are freshly prepared every day, and she is careful to select cuts that have a good ratio of lean meat to fat for the benefit of customers who are more health conscious.

Fishball Noodle


No matter the hour of the day, you are likely to see a queue in front of this stall. The main attraction? The Signature Noodle, which comprises springy egg noodles topped with handmade fishballs, slices of fishcake, and a special meatball made using a blend of minced fish and pork. If you are craving a simple but hearty bowl of noodles, this is sure to hit the spot!

Mee Hoon Kueh / Koka Noodle / Ee-Mian / Pork Porridge

One of Fei Siong Group’s hawker entrepreunership programme graduates, Yi Jie spent 3 months gaining work experience at Nam Kee Pau at The Grandstand. Following the traditional method he learned, his Mee Hoon Kueh dough is freshly made and torn by hand to achieve the perfect, chewy bite.

The noodles are served in a comforting homemade broth brewed over several hours using pig’s bones for natural sweetness. Other dishes popular among customers of all ages include Koka Noodle, Ee Mian and Pork Porridge.

Nam Kee Pau

Nam Kee Pau is a famous steamed bun specialty brand originating from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Following the chain’s proprietary secret recipe, all buns are freshly handmade daily and feature a variety of sumptuous fillings. Customers can also pick up other steamed snacks such as glutinous rice and siew mai (pork dumplings), as well as hot and cold beverages.

Previously run by his mother since 2017, this herbal soup stall is currently operated by 26-year-old Fang Zhi Chao, who took over the reins in March 2021.

The stall offers 15 different types of herbal soup, all of which are brewed with nourishing and wholesome ingredients. If you are not sure which to go for, opt for one of the best-sellers: Watercress with Pork Ribs Soup, Lotus Root with Pork Ribs Soup, Black Chicken Herbal Soup, or Flower Cordyceps American Ginseng Chicken Soup.

With humble beginnings as a small food stall over 30 years, Yu Kee is a well-known heritage brand that is popular for Teochew duck rice. The tender meat is doused in a secret traditional recipe braised gravy and served with delicious ikan bilis chilli sauce.

You will have to come early or during off-peak hours if you want to beat the queue at Jue Dai Lor Mee. Throngs of eager customers flock to this stall for its affordable bowls of noodles drenched in rich, starchy braised gravy. Choose from an assortment of toppings, such as fried yam roll, chicken cutlet and cod fish.

Teochew Satay Bee Hoon

Previously working in a freight forwarding company, Ms Joey Teo is another graduate of Fei Siong Social Enterprise’s Entrepreneurship Programme.

As she personally loves Satay Bee Hoon, Joey decided to master cooking this Malay-Chinese fusion dish and make it her star product. Joey spent a lot of effort perfecting the sauce––a thick, nutty gravy that blankets a bed of moist rice vermicelli, fresh cuttlefish, cockles, fried beancurd and kangkong.

Teochew Fish Soup / Fish Porridge

Having learnt from his father how to cook fish soup when he was just 8 years old, Mr Wu has been carrying on the trade for almost 4 decades.

He describes his Teochew fish soup as having a “traditional taste”, brewed purely using batang (Spanish mackerel) fish bones and fish head. Custoemrs love the light and clear broth, which is flavourful with the natural sweetness from the fish, and the thick slices of batang that are firm and perfectly cooked.

Fatty Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle / Carrot Cake

Run by two brothers, this stall is equally popular for its Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee and Carrot Cake.

While the signature Hokkien Mee is deliciously moist and umami, older brother, Jack says you must not miss their homemade sambal belacan which is carefully blended to suit Singaporeans’ preference for spicy food. Be warned –– it packs a pow!

Tamako Ramen-ya

Finding a more value-for-money bowl of ramen than those at Tamako Ramen-Ya will be a tall order. Priced at only $5.80, each ramen bowl here is substantial –– thin, al dente noodles are topped with tender pork chashu, bamboo shoots, marinated egg, and naruto. Choose from four different soups: Tonkotsu, Traditional Shoyu, Miso and Sambal Tonkotsu.

Opened by an enterprising young lady, Ms Khor Ning Min, this stall starts operations at 6am every day in order to churn out a mouthwatering array of freshly fried traditional dough fritters. Try the You Tiao and Butterfly Bun, and pair with a cup of soya bean milk or soya bean curd.

Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle

Having graduated from Fei Siong Social Enterprise’s Entrepreneurship Programme, Ivan is one of the pioneer hawkers at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre.

Noting that there were many Teochew residents in the neighbourhood, he fine-tuned his recipes to cater to their preference for strong flavours. If you’re a bak chor mee fan, make sure to try his Meatball Minced Meat Noodle. Other recommended dishes include Mini Pot Noodles and Teochew Handmade Fish Dumpling Noodle.

Although he only entered the hawker trade in 2018, Mr Liang Yonghe has a good 30 years of cooking experience under his belt.

From chicken to duck to pork, Mr Liang serves several types of roast meats starting from just $3 per plate. Go for the Char Siew Roasted Pork Rice/Noodles, where you can savour the best of both worlds –– juicy Hong Kong-style char siew and crispy, fatty pork belly!

Previously working at Crystal Jade, Chef, who hails from Hong Kong, now serves sumptuous, yet affordable Chinese Cantonese zi char fare in the heartlands. He has about 50 dishes he considers his signatures, including Pork Rib with Coffee & Sliced Almond, Salted Egg Shrimp Ball, Homestyle Beancurd with Mushroom, and Hong Kong Yew Mee.

Hoping to help preserve local hawker culture, Aericurl joined Fei Siong Social Enterprise’s Entrepreneurship Programme when she was 23 years old and upon graduating, opened a traditional dessert stall at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre.

Assisted by her mother, Aericurl came up with her own dessert recipes. Their best-seller is the Chendol, drizzled with rich gula Melaka and coconut milk. Other well-loved desserts include bubur hitam and earl grey longan ice.

HK Guang Dong Putian Kitchen / Mala Fragrant Pot

With over 40 years of culinary experience and having served at Crystal Jade and Royal London Duck previously, veteran chef Mr Leung switched to the hawker trade in 2015.

From Guangdong and Putien cuisine to Mala Fragrant Pot, there is plenty to be savoured here. Try his White Beehoon, White Lor Mee, and Spicy Fried Chicken.

Leo Satay

With roots dating back to 1960, Leo Satay is part of a family heritage spanning three generations. The Leo family takes pride in using choice cuts of meat and fine spices to produce delicious satay.

You can order their chicken and pork satay by the stick, or in a set consisting of five skewers and one ketupat (rice cake). And don’t forget the accompanying peanut sauce, blended with sweet and tangy pineapple sauce.

If you’re in need of some refreshment, a freshly squeezed juice ought to do the trick! Stall owner, Mr Yip recommends a green Celery Juice for detox, ABC Juice (apple, beetroot, carrot) for a vitamin boost, and Avocado Juice for a dose of nutrients. Unlike most other vegetarian hawker food stalls, Shu Shi Piao Xiang Vegetarian offers a variety of 20 to 30 dishes daily. Dharsha Indian Food

Formerly a restaurant chef, Vijay opened his stall at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre 3 years ago, selling Indian food and beverages. Vijay keeps his food affordably priced so that everyone can enjoy it; his Plain Prata costs just $1 apiece.

Other popular dishes here include Masala Thosai, Briyani and Mee Goreng. To complete an utterly  satisfying meal, end off with a fragrant cup of Teh Tarik or Teh Halia (brewed with fresh ginger).
